I feel that no matter how advanced we as a whole become, it is never acceptable for a teacher to be anything other than a mentor and a guide to a student. Therefore, my theory is that a teacher will not accept advances from a student offering friendship on social media sites. If it gets to a point when a student or teacher are lacking and needing sufficient info that they can’t solve the old fashion way, then you can really get old school by having a student / teacher conferences. It has and will always be effective than networking sites. Socializing skills are best learned in real life. When I asked another colleague of mines on her opinion on student and teachers being friends on Facebook and Twitter she stated; â€Å"I definitely do not like it because my daughter posted something on Facebook in regards of her and her boyfriend getting into an argument and that she was breaking up with him. The next day the when she got to class her teacher came up to her and asked her was she alright and that she would find another boyfriend soon†. My daughter was stunned and ashamed at the same time. And that caused her not to post anything personal on her page again. Social life has one thing that has remained constant throughout past years: change. With such a fluid society, it is projected that the United States today will shift from a â€Å"majority-minority† to a â€Å"minority-majority† society by 2042 (Stoll, 2009). â€Å"In 2010, whites accounted for about 70% of the U.S. population, but this percentage continues to decline (Jones Dovidio, 2014)†. How would this radical change impact the newly considered minority? Would such a dramatic change in the racial divide change the way â€Å"privilege† is viewed? Throughout history there has been friction between minorities and majorities. The â€Å"superior† group has advantages while the â€Å"inferior† group experiences disadvantages. The trouble with literature on majority-minority is the variation in definitions. In reference to this paper, the term minority will be a measure of numerical underrepresented ethnic population (Jones Dovidio, 2014). Now looking at previous literature covering this topic many illuminate on persuasion, minority influence, group development, Social Identity Theory, and conformity (Prislin et al, 2000; Legrenzi et al., 1991; Kelly, 1990). Prislin et al. provide a particularly useful study examining the effects of the loss and gain of majority status position within a group. Prislin et al. Compare and Contrast Essay Maternity, written by Lilika Nakos and The Lemon Orchard, by Alex La Guma both present an insight into the strengths and weaknesses of human nature. The teenage boy, Mikali, in Maternity stands for courage and determination, who tries at any cost to save his infant brother. Similarly, in The Lemon Orchard the protagonist is a man of great self-respect who retains his pride against great odds. The story is mainly about a black man who is to be beaten up by a mob of white men solely because he has dared to ask for justice. The ominous atmosphere established in this short story is primarily evoked through the use of symbolism. Despite the striking similarity, Maternity concludes on an uplifting tone, conveying that although racism leads to conflict it can also be an opportunity for a rewarding and enriching experience. There is always hope, and it takes unique situations to overcome racism, as well as compassion from people who know no barrier of creed, caste and colour. In contrast wit h the serious approach to racism is The All-American Slurp, written by Lensey Namioka. This is a humorous approach to a young girls encounter with a foreign culture. This short story playfully mocks culture groups who want to fit in, by watering down their own culture to adapt and feel accepted. All of these short stories equally attack the presumed values of society. Maternity initially opens by describing the living conditions of the Armenian refugees camp, with Nakos focusing on visual imagery to vividly portray the negative aspects of Mikalis existence. The conditions are miserable and unhygienic. Nakos uses the adjectives small and ruined to enhance the destitute atmosphere, whilst the rich live under tents, the rest of them sought shelter under carpets held up at four corners by sticks. The refugee camp, ironically still maintains the classes that exist in society. They are separated by, their economic and racial backgrounds. Lilika Nakos then portrays the suffering of the protagonist, Mikali in his search for food. When he eats the bread that is given to him, it weighed on him because he did not want to live on the charity from others, as he feels a sense of guilt. He wants to work and earn his living but is unable to work as he is burdened with the responsibility of his motherless infant brother. Thus, he is left to the mercy of his countrymen, though the wailing of the starved infant sickens them. Maternity means state of being a mother, motherhood with the whole story revolving around maternal affection depicting that being a mother alone is not sufficient but what is important is to have the nobleness of a mother. It is ironic, women are normally exhibited as mothers, and mothers are stereotypically meant to be affectionate and genuinely kind, however there is a reverse in roles: The Chinaman came to him and taking the baby in his arms, tenderly pressed it to him This wonderful contrast to the others; it highlights the love, warmth and forgiveness evoked by this particular man. The Chinaman retains his sense of humanity, whilst selfishness prevails amongst the women. The Chinamans wife is portrayed as the ideal mother, evokes culture warmth and etiquette as she accepts the child as it is. One parallel between Maternity and The Lemon Orchard is their use of tactile imagery and symbolism, which is so delicate, the reader, may not consciously recognize it, yet it helps immensely in creating the menacing atmosphere desired. Alex la Guma also wants to show the conflict between man and nature. So uses detailed description and pathetic fallacy to make the reader feel apprehensive and make the weather, scene and story fit together: there was a chill in the air; and the moon was hidden behind long, high parallels of cloud, which hung like suspended streamers of dirty cotton wool in the sky. In The Lemon Orchard the notion of chill and winter keeps circulating; it has a strong metaphorical significance, representing the indifference and coldness of the white man. On a very basic level, one can already note the significance for the use of night and dark imagery to portray a sense of secrecy and fear of the white men. On a further level, Alex la Gumas use of night imagery indicates the white mens blindness towards racism. It is almost like the moon senses something is not right and implies the emotion of fear, which both the characters are feeling. Ironically also a dog is intimidated by the white mens presence and stops barking, as they got closer. It is evident the white men are not welcome in the environment. As stated by the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21-Food and Drugs, Food additives includes all substances not exempted by section 201(s) of the act, the intended use of which results or may reasonably be expected to result, directly or indirectly, either in their becoming a component of food or otherwise affecting the characteristics of food. According to an article by S.E. Smith, food Additives are chemical substances added in food to enhance safety, flavor, appearance, and texture of the food. Without additives, several foods would be green and sour before they even get to the store shelves. Sugar would clump up together, mayonnaise would separate, and cotton candy would be hard as a rock. There are two types of food additives, direct and indirect. Direct Additives are those added to food intentionally, to create a desired look. Indirect additives are those that are added unintentionally while the food was being processed, packaged, stored, or howe ver it was handled. Most direct additives are listed on the food labels, since this is a general rule for manufacturers. Based on the EHSO website, there are five main reasons why food additives are used; to improve nutritional value; to maintain product consistency; to maintain its wholesomeness; provide leavening; and enhance the color and flavor. The use of food additives is one of the major issues today. It stirs confusion and concerns whether these additives being added to the foodstuff is in fact safe or dangerous. Food additives have been used for thousands of years. In addition to that, companies have also produced food that lasts longer by using preservatives. However, before additives can be used in foods, manufacturers must first file a petition to the FDA for approval. Both group received drinks containing sodium benzoate and artificial food colorings. These results showed an increase in overactive, im pulsive, and inattentive behavior. Monosodium glutamate is also one example that can severely affect a childs behavior. MSG is an excitotoxin, which means that it acts to over agitate the neurons of the central nervous system causing physical and psychological problems which can worsen and become permanent damages. Aside from ADHD, children and even adults can suffer from obesity as well. Even those that have been FDA approved can be a contribution to obesity. Children who ate processed foods in fast food restaurants ate at least 126 calories than on days they did not. Throughout the year, these children have gained about 13 pounds just from fast food. Sodium nitrate can be found in processed meats, as this is convenient, cheap, and can produce a lot, most fast food chains often choose this as their best choice of meat to provide to consumers. Sodium nitrate is actually dangerous, since it is believed to be the primary cause of pancreatic cancer in humans even if consumed with a moderate quantity. Manufacturers use this type of chemical substance because it turns the meat bright red, which again attracts consumers. Monosodium glutamate, again, is one of the main additives that can contribute to obesity. Up to now, scientists injects MSG on lab rats to use in diet and diabetes test studies, wher e they found out that monosodium glutamate can be a factor of obesity, but still, manufacturers use it to enhance flavor and induce consumers into liking their products. MSG is an addictive substance, causing people to eat more, thus leading to obesity. In fact, the dosage of prepackaged meals, fast foods, and other fast foods have increased each time, as the FDA has not set a limit of how much it can be added to the foods. Another chemical additive people should be concerned about is aspartame, which has over 92 reported side effects, and one of them weight gainer. Foods that include hydrogenated fats or oils can also contribute to ob esity. As a typical body, it is essential to have fatty acids to function normally, but a hydrogenated fat has zero essential fatty acids. It prevents the absorption of nutrients in other words its nutrient dead. So not only does it not have nutrients, it also takes away nutrients from other food. Another harmful type of fat is called trans fatty acids or TFA which is found in most processed foods. Soft drinks, flavored minerals, fruit drinks: these all contain benzene in them. Benzene is another additive that people should be alert of as this can cause nausea, rapid heart rate, and death. Consuming too much sodium chloride can affect ones kidney and adrenal glands, reduces calcium and other valuable nutrients found in the body. It can also contribute to high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Caffeine, which is found naturally in coffee, tea and cocoa, can elevate the stomach-acid secretion ca using peptic ulcers. It can also affect reproduction and cause birth defects such as cleft palates, missing fingers and deformity of the skull. Caffeine can be very addicting that is why some people have a hard time stopping themselves from consuming too much sodas, coffee, and other drinks containing this additive. People who try to withdraw themselves from using caffeine will have symptoms such as headaches, drowsiness, and bad tempers. Pregnant women or those who are planning to get pregnant should avoid consuming caffeine as this can cause birth defects and miscarriage. Avoiding toxins and the chemical additives mentioned is an important step to help improve lowering the risks of diseases. Toxins may affect ones health causing minor side effects and other health conditions. Those that have immediate effects may feel headaches, might feel a change in their energy level, and may affect their mental concentration, behavior or immune response. Those with long-term effects could be at risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other serious health conditions. ‘Oedipus the King,’ also known as ‘Oedipus Rex’ is one of the three Greek plays about Thebes written by Sophocles. In fact the plays form a trilogy (Oedipus Rex, Oedipus Colonus and Antigone) with the same characters. The plays are sometimes referred to as the ‘Oedipus Plays’ since Oedipus is the main character. Sophocles’ genius lies in the crafting of these plays, and their characters, almost bringing them to life. Throughout the course of ‘Oedipus Rex’ he expresses the power of fate and predestination that leads the characters astray. In fact, it was the stubborn belief in superstitions and prophecies that Sophocles highlights. Both the heroes, Oedipus and Creon are popular tragic heroes of Greek mythology. Oedipus is bright and has profound intellect, but at the same time is quick to make rash decisions without much thought. Creon though is depicted as a man of reason, much more subtle, unlike the brash Oedipus. The play begins with Oedipus ruling Thebes with a firm hand. The people believe him to be their savior because Oedipus is the one who saves them from the curse of the Sphinx, a half female half lion monster, by solving her riddle. King Lauis who ruled before Oedipus had left Thebes for a while under the kingship of Creon. But King Lauis is killed. Meanwhile Creon offers his sister’s hand in marriage to anyone who could rid the city of the Sphinx by solving her riddle. It is Oedipus who is able to solve it, marries Jocosta (Creon’s sister), and gains rule of part of Thebes. From the beginning Oedipus is aware of that there is some curse on him. He learns from an oracle that he is destined to kill his father and mate with his own mother. But it is his over-bearing belief in this curse that eventually results in his fall. At the beginning of the play Oedipus is shown to have great strength of character and will, and is a man of understanding. People have a high regard for him and fear him the same. But the one weakness that lied in Oedipus was his impulsiveness. Throughout the play are numerous instances where Oedipus makes rash decisions, and is quick to jump to conclusions without much thought. His vanity leads him to kill Lauis over a mere brawl. Later when the blind prophet Tiresias warns him not to investigate the murder of Lauis, Oedipus is incensed and argues that Tiresias himself is the murderer. When the prophet reveals the truth, Oedipus is enraged, accusing the old man of corruption. He walked anxiously behind her. He refused to return to his own room and so we converted the attic into a room. He never comes out of it. All he does is sit up there all day. Ive offered to decorate it for him but he insists that he likes it the way it is. He also always has to say that he is the leader and we must do what he wants. Sweat dripped from his forehead. On his bed lay hundred of crumpled drawings. All the drawings were done with so much accuracy, but without colour, they lacked life. It was chanting again. How are you feeling today then? There was silence and no apparent movement. The childs eyes made the doctor nervous and restless. So, what are these drawings? Did you do these? They are splendid. Yes, whispered the boy. His mouth hardly moving. I did these, but this is my favourite one. The boy reached over the bed and picked up a shoebox off the floor. He opened it with so much care and presented a perfectly folded piece of paper. He opened it with his eyes so wide. He showed the picture of a huge shell to the doctor. Like all the other pictures in the room, so much care had been taken over it. However, this picture had the quality of colour added to it. Ralph my dear, it is freezing in here! Let me light you a fire- No! Screamed Ralph. He sprang out of his bed while making horrific snarling noises. He began to circle the old woman. The doctor grabbed Ralphs arm as an attempt to out him to bed again, but Ralph squirmed free of the grip and stood his ground in front of the terrified Mrs Doon. What did I say? I said that I would get waxy if you tried to light that fire, didnt I? I want to be alone with the doctor so let us be! The old woman shuffled nervously out of the room. See what I mean? she cried just as she left the room. Ralph jumped happily back into bed, satisfied with his victory over an adult. It was obvious that he had found someone he liked in the form of the doctor. Still clutching onto his drawing, he sat at the top of the bed, quite innocently, and not making a sound. The doctor stirred on his spot very cautiously and slowly made his way to a chair at the end of the bed. He began to say something, but stopped himself and sat there in his own thoughts for a few minutes. Then he began. He opened up his notebook and took out a pencil.
